The Northbrook Sustainability Commission held its regular meeting on May 21, 2026, with most discussion focused on logistics for the upcoming Climate Action Day event and a packed schedule of community sustainability activities.
Northbrook Climate Action Day Preparation
With 24 exhibitors/participants on the current list, Liaison Kate Carney walked through the site plan and table layout for the May 30 Climate Action Day event. The commission discussed giveaways including 644 plant plugs and trees, a Bingo/scavenger hunt at the SC table, and a possible solar power map display. Members were asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. to help set up, with cleanup beginning at 1 p.m.; the event will proceed rain or shine. Carney also noted that residents who use community solar provider MC Squared — contracted with the Village — can receive a 20% discount on their bill.
Upcoming Events and Green Moments Schedule
The commission reviewed a dense calendar of sustainability activities, including a Tree Giveaway on May 22, a Solar Power Hour co-hosted with MREA and CUB on June 1 at 6:30 p.m. in Village Hall's Board Room, and a Flamingo Friday Kick-Off on June 5 from 5–7 p.m. staffed by Members Lee and Weiss. Green Moments presentations are scheduled through December, covering topics such as sustainable travel, pumpkin composting (Pumpkin Smash, October 27), and a garden update. Member Stash separately noted he is hosting a Home Tour of his all-electric home on June 11, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in partnership with ComEd.

Commission Meeting Day and Membership
Members briefly discussed whether to shift the regular meeting day from the current Thursday schedule; Liaison Carney noted any change would require a collective decision and approval by the Village Board of Trustees. The commission was asked to consider alternative days — possibly the first Thursday or a Wednesday — for the 2027 calendar. Members were also encouraged to suggest viable candidates for open commission seats. Liaison Carney introduced new Sustainability Intern Lyla Mroczka, who gave a brief background.
