Manager's Report — 29 May 2026: Police Chief Retiring July 1 After 30 Years

Chief Ustich's retirement takes effect July 1, with a celebration planned for June 30. Firefighter/Paramedic Stacy Kundinger, who most recently served as Regular Engineer Driver, retired after 25 years with the Village.

The Plan Commission meets Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. to review the Final Planned Development submittal by Lexington Homes for a 53-unit townhome development at 1825 Shermer Road. No Village Board meetings are scheduled for the coming week.

The contractor applied pavement markings and placed topsoil and sod on the east side of Shermer Road this week. Next week's work includes new tree installations, permanent signage, irrigation system installation in the roadway median, and a concrete foundation for a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at Farnsworth Lane. The contractor poured concrete panels along Bordeaux Drive this week and is now substantially complete with scheduled concrete work; cleanup and restoration continue throughout the subdivision next week. As of May 20, 11,977 automated water meter installations are complete, with approximately 295 accounts still needing to be scheduled; residents are urged to schedule promptly to avoid water service disruption.

Poupard Place at 1593 Shermer Road is nearing completion, with Housing Opportunity Development Corporation seeking occupancy in June 2026.

Contractor Advanced Tree Care has completed 14 of 47 stumps from previously removed trees; remaining work is expected to finish next week, weather permitting, after which Public Works will add topsoil and grass seed — adjacent residents are asked to water restored areas periodically. The 2026 Slow Mow May initiative, in which the Public Works Center and Fire Stations 10 and 12 limited mowing to 2–3 times during the month, runs through June 1, with regular schedules resuming the following week.

Northbrook Switch Together – Power Hour is Monday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Village Hall, helping residents save on solar panel purchases (RSVPs requested but not required). Village Blood Drive runs Friday, June 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in partnership with Vitalant; appointments can be made at 877-258-4825 or vitalant.org (code ORD0670A), and donors giving June 1–30 who use code JUNEGIFT-2026-V receive a $15 Rewards gift card. Flamingo Friday Kickoff is Friday, June 5 from 5–7 p.m. behind Village Hall, with music, food, and giveaways; attendees are encouraged to bring food donations for the Northfield Township Food Pantry, including juice, canned salmon, sardines, rice noodles, and granola bars. Climate Action Day is Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Village Hall, featuring a sustainability resource fair and demonstration garden. The Disability Inclusion Commission is accepting nominations for its inaugural Disability Inclusion Award through July 31 via an online form.
