Manager's Report — 12 Jun 2026: Northbrook Earns Bronze EV Ready Community Designation

Northbrook earned a Bronze-level designation through the EV Readiness Program, which helps local governments prepare for electric vehicle adoption by improving zoning, parking, permitting, municipal fleets, and community engagement. Northbrook was one of nine communities recognized in the program's fourth cohort.

The Plan Commission holds a public meeting Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. to review the Final Planned Development submittal by Lexington Homes for a 53-unit townhome development at 1825 Shermer Road. The project received concept plan approval from the Village Board in late 2025. The Commission will also hold an additional public hearing on an amendment to the new Zoning Code regarding fence height for single-family residential properties, which was incorrectly depicted at the May 19 hearing.

The new Life Time Fitness facility at 1300 Techny Road is in the final stages of interior improvements ahead of a grand opening later this month.

Weather delayed roadway patching near 1000 Waukegan Road (near Crestwood Place) to Wednesday, June 17 at 8 p.m., when Public Works will close the right northbound lane to repair a temporary patch from a water main break last winter. Crews will pour a concrete base June 17 and finish with asphalt June 18, with the road anticipated to reopen around 3 p.m. June 18. Beginning the week of June 15, contractor Precision Pavement Marking will begin operations in Section 7, starting in the eastern portion and moving westward. Work is anticipated to be completed by the week of June 29, weather permitting.

Contractor Schroeder Asphalt Services is cutting and removing sections of curb and gutter on Woodhead Drive, Eva Drive, Dana Court, Donovan Glen Court, Marder Court, and Surrey Lane in preparation for replacement. New concrete curb and gutter is anticipated to be poured later this week, with full project completion expected the week of July 13. Residents whose driveways are directly impacted will receive a doorhanger 72 hours in advance; driveways may be inaccessible for approximately 5–7 business days. At the Fleet Maintenance Garage, crews began excavation for the StormTrap stormwater detention facility, waterproofed and insulated the north elevator pit, completed backfilling, began drain tile installation, and installed load-bearing columns and beams in the lower level; upcoming work includes pouring the concrete slab to support the StormTrap and excavating for the trash enclosure. At Fire Station 11, the concrete slab pour for the StormTrap was completed June 5, with StormTrap installation continuing through the week of June 15 followed by connecting stormwater utility infrastructure.

Work between Willow Road and Walters Avenue has continued with pavement markings and permanent signage. In the West Commuter Parking Lot, crews are installing the irrigation system within the median and the concrete foundation for the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at Farnsworth Lane. Public Works completed restoration of all 47 stump grinding sites, adding topsoil and seeding; adjacent residents are asked to water these areas periodically to establish new grass. The contractor also finished planting the remaining 76 trees this week, completing all 269 parkway trees scheduled for the 2026 Spring program, which the Village Forester will now inspect.

Public Works began a full street sweeping cycle covering the Central Business District, Village-owned roadways, and residential streets, currently working Sections 1 and 5 with full completion anticipated by Friday, June 19. Residents are reminded to apply mulch 2–4 inches deep and keep it away from tree trunks; excess mulch around parkway trees may result in corrective action and property owners could face costs or fines if Public Works must remove it.

Officers conducted a police station tour for GBN special needs students and a local resident, and attended meet-and-greet events at Axelson Manor and Brandel Care with Therapy K9 Chloe, as well as a memorial service at Covenant Village.

The Northbrook Farmers Market opens Wednesday, June 17 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Meadow Plaza Parking Lot, with a celebration also marking the Village's 125th Anniversary. Musicians from the Northbrook Symphony will perform, and the traditional opening ceremony takes place at 10 a.m.; free attractions include live music, face painting, watermelon slices, and swag.

Northbrook residents may dispose of household waste, including old furniture, Saturday, June 20 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fleet Maintenance Garage (1227 Cedar) or Public Works (655 Huehl). IDs will be checked; landscape waste, hazardous materials, electronics, tires, and other restricted items will not be accepted.

The Village of Northbrook and Northbrook Park District host the 4th annual Grapes on the Green at Village Green Park on Saturday, June 20 at 4 p.m., featuring wine tastings, live music, art, and games. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic dinner; light snacks will be provided and tickets are available for purchase.

Race Day is Thursday, July 23, and volunteers are needed to assist with registration, course marshaling, and other event activities. No prior experience is required.
