The Northbrook Sustainability Commission met June 18, 2026, spending most of its time debating how to improve the poorly attended Climate Action Day event and settling on a tentative 2027 date.
Northbrook Climate Action Day: Attendance and Visibility Concerns
Members agreed the event drew better turnout than last year but said location and marketing remain serious problems — people were "stumbling upon" the event rather than seeking it out, and no one visited the garden area. Suggested alternative venues included Village Green, the Metra parking lot, Cherry Lane Shopping Center, and the lawn at Northbrook United Methodist Church at Cherry and Western; Liaison Carney said she would look into the Village Hall option. Members also discussed tying the event to an existing community event, partnering with Chicago EVs for an EV car show component (as Wilmette has done), and involving schools and scout troops. The commission set a tentative date of June 5, 2027, 10 a.m.–1 p.m., with finalization expected in November 2026, and agreed to add a brainstorming session to the July agenda.
Northbrook Community Gardens: Item Deferred
The community gardens agenda item was postponed because the expected presenter, Brian Bruce Sr., was unable to attend. No rescheduled date was specified in the minutes.
Green Moments Schedule
The commission confirmed a schedule of brief sustainability presentations at upcoming meetings: Becky Lee on Sustainable Travel (June 23), a garden update in September, Pumpkin Smash in October, with July, August, and December slots still to be determined. Chair Reynolds also noted a forthcoming meeting between staff and the Public Works department regarding buckthorn management.
