Senior Services Commission, 09 Jul 2026: Lending Closet and Brochure Updates Advance
The Northbrook Senior Services Commission met July 9 at Crestwood Place, approving financial reports and advancing discussions on a community lending closet and an update to the senior resources guide.
Manager's Report: Crestwood Maintenance and Occupancy
Manager Dave Vaicaitis reported three vacant apartments currently under applicant review. Upcoming physical improvements include converting tenant storage door knobs to levers (following completion of hallway fire door lever changes), new landscaping shrubbery along the C-building's Waukegan side, tree trimming to be finished by end of July, and new A/B lobby furniture scheduled for installation in August.
Resident Commissioner Report: Bikes, Stairs, and Parking
Commissioner Malloy presented the June tenant committee report, prompting discussion on several resident concerns. Chairman Rosenberg clarified that electric bikes are prohibited on public Village sidewalks under the existing ordinance. HODC agreed to investigate how to improve visibility on the carpeted stairs in the C-Building, following a resident suggestion to paint the stair edges. Commissioners also noted that only four state-approved handicapped parking spaces exist for residents, with none designated for visitors, and that Crestwood's red handicap stickers are only valid when accompanied by a state-issued handicap placard.
Budget and Finance: April and May Reports Approved
The commission reviewed the April and May 2026 financial reports without comment. Vote: Commissioner Caldwell moved approval, seconded by Commissioner Hazaray; both reports were approved by unanimous voice vote.
New Business: Senior Resources Guide Under Review
Chairman Rosenberg distributed the current version of the Northbrook Senior Resources Guide to commissioners and asked them to submit suggested updates before the September meeting, when revisions will be reviewed.
Old Business: Lending Closet and Telephony Discussions Deferred
Commissioners discussed whether Crestwood could resume lending equipment such as canes, walkers, and shower seats — a service previously offered by the Senior Center that has since ended. A question about potential Village legal liability was raised but not resolved; the discussion will continue at the September meeting. A separate agenda item on Crestwood telephony and network services was also postponed to September.
Public Comment: Website Accuracy and Complaint Process
A resident flagged outdated information on the Crestwood website, which is maintained by HODC; management agreed to review and correct it. Another resident asked how to report complaints about HODC employees. Chairman Rosenberg directed residents to bring concerns first to the Crestwood Manager, then to HODC management, noting that HODC will keep the Commission informed of significant issues.
