Several infrastructure projects are advancing across Northbrook this week, with a water main shutdown now scheduled for Thursday, August 20, giving residents on Grace Road roughly 8 hours without service.

Activity Reports
The Northbrook Police Department updated its weekly bulletin for the week ending August 14, 2026. Officers held a "Cone with a Cop" event on Wednesday, August 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Northbrook McDonald's at 200 Skokie Blvd., where community members could meet officers, take photos inside a police car, and receive a free vanilla ice cream cone. Department representatives also participated in a community meet-and-greet at Covenant Village Town Center.
On the employee front, a retirement ceremony was held July 29 at Fire Station 11 honoring Engineer Paul Rutkowski, who retired August 3 after more than 29 years of service, including time as president of Local 1894's Executive Board. Firefighter/Paramedics Bronson Flannagan and Tom Longaker were appointed to the position of Engineer Driver Paramedic this week. Internal Services Manager Jason Batalden, who served the Police Department for more than 26 years, is departing. Carol White joined the Village this week as Economic Development Coordinator within the Development and Planning Services Department.
Save the Date
Plein Air Photography Competition runs August 17 through September 6, 2026. The Northbrook Arts Commission is inviting photographers of all ages and skill levels to participate in a three-week competition celebrating Northbrook's places, people, and perspectives. The first set of challenges will be released Monday, August 17, at 9 a.m.
Northbrook Brewfest returns Saturday, September 19, from 3–7 p.m. at Village Green Park in downtown Northbrook. The 6th Annual event, co-hosted by the Village and the Northbrook Park District, features craft beer tastings, live music, a photo booth, and games. Food is available from surrounding restaurants or guests may bring their own picnic. Tickets will be available through the Northbrook Park District webpage.
Project Updates
2026 Sidewalk Replacement Program: Contractor Schroeder & Schroeder completed removal and replacement on the odd-numbered side of streets in Area 1 and is finishing minor driveway patching. Work on the even-numbered side has begun. Full completion of Area 1, including restoration and cleanup, is anticipated by Monday, August 17, weather permitting. Cedar Lane Storm & Sanitary Sewer Work: Contractor Reed Construction (working for Greenbriar School) completed sanitary sewer improvements this week. Shermer Road Corridor Improvements: Contractor A Lamp Concrete Contractors, Inc. continued addressing punch list items during the week of August 10; that work will continue over the coming weeks. FY 26–27 Concrete Street Patching Improvements: Beginning the week of August 17, Schroeder & Schroeder will work along the even-numbered side of roadways through the Charlemagne Subdivision in the following order: Bernay Drive (Laburnum to Versailles), Versailles Drive (Bernay to Bordeaux), and Bordeaux Drive (Versailles to Charlemagne). Residents should expect intermittent lane and parking restrictions. Door hanger notices will be provided 24–48 hours before any driveway access restrictions. 2026 Water Main Improvements: Due to weather delays, water main pipe installation by contractor Curran Contracting Co. is set to begin the week of August 17, running from the north side of Grace Road toward the cul-de-sac island. The water main shutdown is now scheduled for Thursday, August 20; the connection work takes approximately 8 hours, during which residents will have no water service. Fire Station 11 Construction: Leopardo Construction began installing concrete masonry units the week of August 10; this work continues through September. Underground electrical work has also started, and complete interior building backfill is expected by early the week of August 17. Steel framework installation is scheduled to begin the week of August 17, weather permitting.
Fleet Maintenance Garage Construction: Leopardo Construction has completed sanitary sewer service line and fire protection sprinkler installation. Upcoming work includes continued geothermal drilling, office area framing, and garage floor preparation for radiant heating tubing.
Development News: A Preliminary Review Request from Synergy Badminton seeking a Comprehensive Plan Amendment, rezoning, and Special Permit to establish an Olympic badminton training facility at 2775–2783 Shermer Road is scheduled for a future Village Board meeting. A public hearing on renewal of the Special Permit for Kids Science Labs at 840 Willow Road (Willow Festival) is scheduled for the August 25, 2026, Regular Meeting of the Village Board.
A building permit was issued for a new concrete storage/testing room at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. A business license was issued for Firstline Medical Care Ltd., a new physician's office at 425 Huehl Rd.
