Sustainability Commission, 21 Aug 2026: Climate Action Day Gets 2027 Overhaul

The Northbrook Sustainability Commission spent most of its August 20 meeting brainstorming ways to expand and reposition its annual Climate Action Day for 2027, while also discussing changes to the village's recycling drop-off program.

Commissioners identified several weaknesses in the current event — chiefly that its parking-lot location is too hidden — and brainstormed a wide range of improvements. Ideas discussed included yard signs placed by commissioners in their neighborhoods, plant giveaways advertised on flyers, electronics recycling, school flyer drops via "electronic backpacks," partnerships with Goldfish Swim School and scout troops, student music performances, and garden tours. A tentative date of June 5, 2027, was noted. The question of event cleanup went unresolved: Member Stash argued village staff or a contractor such as LRS should handle it, while Liaison Carney explained that Public Works is short-staffed; no final decision was recorded. Members were asked to identify action steps and submit 2027 priority suggestions by September 7, 2026.

Village Recycling Program Changes

Liaison Carney informed commissioners that the plastic-bag drop-off program is being discontinued due to cross-contamination problems. Battery and light-bulb drop-off continues Tuesdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Home Depot, Lowe's, and Batteries Plus also accept batteries through a state EPA program. Carney said she is developing communications around pickup of the library's recycling receptacle and asked whether the commission wanted to distribute information to residents about these options.

Meeting Day and Other Administrative Updates

The commission reached consensus to keep its regular meeting on the third Thursday of the month, rejecting a proposed change. Carney also noted two vacancies on the commission, with new applications under review; students are eligible to apply. Upcoming "Green Moments" presentations were outlined through December 2026.

Public Comments on Recycling and Native Gardens

Resident Joan Crowe noted the absence of recycling bins at Northbrook Days. A separate online comment, relayed by Chair Reynolds, asked the commission and village to promote wild and native gardens and to avoid removing mature trees; no formal action was taken on either comment.
