Northbrook REI Selected as One of 10 National Pilot Sites for Co-Op’s ‘Garage Sale’ Revival
By Colin Danley

Outdoor specialty retailer REI Co-op announced that its Northbrook location will serve as one of just 10 stores nationwide testing the return of its traditional "Garage Sale" events.
The pilot program marks an initial exploration into bringing back the long-running, in-person member events that the retailer largely paused in 2020.
According to corporate announcements, the test is intended to gauge customer interest in community-focused, single-day events alongside their existing trade-in infrastructure. The Northbrook location is the sole Illinois store and the only site in the upper Midwest included in the pilot.
The event features discounted returned and clearance gear, trade-in processing for store credit, and inventory specifically set aside for the pilot. Access is limited to existing REI Co-op members, though non-members can join on-site via the company’s standard $30 lifetime membership fee.
Store feedback and turnout metrics gathered from Northbrook and the other nine test locations will determine whether REI rolls the event format out to its broader fleet of more than 180 stores.
Members attending the events can expect:
Newly available Re/Supply inventory
Discounted used gear and clearance products
Opportunities to trade in eligible used gear for an REI gift card
20% off one Re/Supply apparel or footwear item during the event
A free tote with a qualifying Re/Supply or clearance purchase, while supplies last
Light refreshments and an event experience designed to help members connect with Green Vests and their local outdoor community
The events are open to REI Co-op members. Nonmembers may purchase a $30 lifetime membership to participate.
